INSPIRATION MONDAY: A be kind rewrite challenge

From “Read the prompts, get inspired, write something. No word count minimum or maximum. You don’t have to include the exact prompt in your piece, and you can interpret the prompt(s) any way you like.”

We snap at each other.

“Did you get milk?”

“I thought you were going to get it.”

It’s not OK.

We’re hot and cold, but not in our love for each other. We are literally hot and cold, but never at the same time.

You see, the AC broke on Tuesday. Then the hot water heater broke on Wednesday. Everything’s wrong.

After a mild spring of frost warnings and dead tomato plants, summer arrives this week with her bags packed, ready to stay for a while. She cries, “I’m here!” And our AC crumples under the pressure, seizing, dying, falling silent.

“It’s so hot,” the children whine.

We snap some more.

As if sensing the sea of sweat to be washed away, the hot water heater crumples under the pressure, shorting out, dying, falling cold. The sweat congeals.

“You stink.”

“YOU stink!” The children scream.

(You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream. But it melts.)

“We need milk,” we say in unison.

We stand there, the heat as oppressive as the unwanted house guest it is.

We look at each other, feeling sorry, knowing she should hug and make up, but it’s just too darn hot.

He grabs the keys and heads out the door.

“I’ll go get milk.”
