Initially, I thought, “What a great way to cure world hunger!” Then I realized that such a pill would probably be developed and distributed by a pharmaceutical company and therefore rendered prohibitively expensive for famine-stricken countries. Sad.
All cynicism aside . . . even though I don’t like to plan meals, shop for meals, cook meals, set the table for meals, or clean up after meals, I do love to eat. And since I don’t really like medicine, I don’t think taking a pill a day would be very satisfying.
Plus, without food, imagine what might happen to our social skills. Already, smart phones and social media have nearly negated the casual get-together. Why travel to a friends house if you can Skype or text or Twitter them? For THE FOOD, of course! (OK, I’m kind of being cynical again, but give me a break, I’m hungry . . . )
We might never visit each other again or have a church picnic or a school bake sale. Would these red or blue nutritional pills come in pimento cheese flavor? I don’t think so! (Pimento cheese sandwiches, cut into crustless little triangles, are the staple of any good Lutheran church picnic.) And what about girl scout cookies and ice cream, cotton candy and candied apples, chips and salsa?!?!
OK, I did just think of another possible advantage of the once-a-day-all-the-nutrition-you-need-so-there’s-no-need-to-snack pill. No more obesity. But still, is it worth trading in your tastebuds to be a size 0? Seriously?

I am with you wholeheartedly on this! Not only is eating AMAZING but you are right, I think it would destroy our last surviving social skills. Imagine never getting dressed up and going out for dinner? Never meeting friends for afternoon wines and tapas? *shudder* I would not want to live in such a world.
Don’t even get me started on no wine. I will cry.
Thanks for your post – another kindred spirit here – AND for this blog. I love ‘the serious writer must write.’ Ah-woman to THAT!!!
That’s right! Thank you!
